Chapter 9

Jamie had never thought of himself as a coward. He’d never run from a fight in his life. Not as a child. Not when he told his parents he was going to be a surgeon, as well as a physician. Not even during the war when the fighting came within feet of where he was performing surgery. And he hadn’t run after the wee French girl died on his table. No, he stayed and faced the next round of wounded with the same stalwartness he had faced the rest of his life.

It was after the last battle and the last soldier had crossed his table that he took a step back and considered his future. His decision to quit practicing medicine had been made with calm detachment and hours and hours of reflection. Or so he had told himself, over and over. However, late at night, when he was all alone with his thoughts and nightmares, he knew it had not been a rational decision, it had been an emotional one. He just knew in his heart he could never pick up a scalpel again.

He most definitely wanted to run away now. As Cora had on the side of the road the other day, when she shocked and unsettled him with her request to become lovers. Not as much as his own announcement that they were engaged to be married. Yet it was her request that threw him into a near panic, not his. Jamie didn’t know how to deal with it. Especially after what she just revealed to him.

“Lass, you don’t have to be askin’ me that,” he stammered.

She gazed at him curiously for a second. “I know that. I just want you to know I’m not rejecting you. I can’t marry you. I can’t marry any man. Not ever again,” she reiterated.

When she turned her soft brown eyes on him, a sense of foreboding raced through him. “However, that doesn’t mean I don’t want to be with you . . . in that special way.”

“Woman,” he sputtered. “Saints preserve me.” Jamie leaped up and backed away. Her light brown eyes swiftly turned dark, and he knew he had upset her. Yet he was at a loss as to how to respond.

How ironic this was. He had been entertaining similar fantasies since that incredible kiss and her declaration alongside the road. In truth, he had been thinking about her in that way since he saw her that first day. But that was all they had been – thoughts and fantasies. He was quite sure no one was more shocked than he when he had boldly announced they were engaged to be married. Nevertheless, as soon as the words left his mouth, the idea took root and began to flourish. Thus, by the time they reached her sitting room, he had gone from being shocked at his own stupidity to being delighted with his ingenuity.

He still didn’t know how he was going to support them. Especially in the lifestyle that she deserved.
